In a significant development, the much-revered Sambalpuri handloom products of Odisha are on the brink of acquiring the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The announcement was made by Roop Rashi, the Textile Commissioner of India, during a noteworthy event held at the IIM Sambalpur campus on Saturday. The potential GI status is anticipated to enhance the recognition and protection of Sambalpuri handloom treasures, including sarees, shawls, dresses, and bed-sheets.
The heritage of Sambalpuri handloom, cherished for its exquisite craftsmanship and traditional artistry, is now poised for an elevated status with the potential grant of a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Roop Rashi, Textile Commissioner of India, unveiled this encouraging development during a significant event at the IIM Sambalpur campus.
During the event, which revolved around small-scale business management and involved veteran weavers, Roop Rashi expressed the Union Ministry of Textiles' keenness to secure the GI status for Sambalpuri handloom products. The GI tag would serve as a hallmark of the distinct geographic origin and uniqueness of these handcrafted treasures.
Emphasizing the importance of safeguarding and promoting traditional art forms, Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) CGM, Dr. Subhransu Sekhar Acharya, also took part in the program. Dr. Acharya shed light on SIDBI's approach to cluster development for veteran weavers of Sambalpur, nurturing their skills and ensuring sustainable growth.
If granted the GI tag, Sambalpuri handloom products will gain national and international recognition, safeguarding their authenticity, and empowering local weavers. This recognition will foster the preservation of the rich cultural heritage woven into every thread of these artistic creations, ensuring their continuation for generations to come.
The impending GI status is set to be a milestone for Sambalpuri handloom products, elevating them to the global stage and securing their position as a true emblem of Odisha's craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
