Apple, known for its innovation in technology, is now venturing into the world of futuristic textiles, as revealed in a recently filed patent application. The tech giant is exploring the concept of embedding touch controls and motion detectors into fabric, potentially creating what can be termed as "smart fabric."
According to Apple, traditional touch screens are rigid and limited in their form factors, which prompted the company to look for alternatives. The patent application introduces the idea of a "fabric sensing device" that would enable Apple to incorporate touch controls and motion sensors seamlessly into textiles, allowing for more versatile and free-flowing designs.
One of the illustrations in the patent application depicts a user touching their shirt's sleeve to control a device, suggesting the potential for smart clothing and accessories, such as an intelligent Apple Watch band.
Apple's interest in touch-sensitive fabric could be seen as a move to diversify its material options. While Apple recently introduced FineWoven, a leather alternative with a focus on sustainability, its iPhone 15 cases made from this material received a lukewarm reception.
In the patent application, Apple also explores various use cases for touch-sensitive textiles beyond its current product lineup. These include applications in "articles of clothing, clothing accessories, handbags, upholstered items, household textiles, and other items that may include a textile component or element."
Notably, this is not Apple's first foray into the realm of smart fabrics. The same team of inventors, including Daniel A. Podhajny, Kathryn P. Crews, and Daniel D. Sunshine, has previously explored touch-sensitive textiles, indicating the company's ongoing commitment to innovation in this field.
