The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has a long history of innovating through the lens of sustainability, and, in celebration of Earth Day, we’re excited to share the strides we’ve made in packaging sustainability.
In anticipation of Earth Day on April 22nd, ELC (Estée Lauder Companies) proudly announces its commitment to redefining luxury through sustainable packaging practices. With a focus on innovation and environmental stewardship, ELC endeavors to create packaging solutions that are not only beautiful and luxurious but also aligned with sustainability goals.
Nancy Mahon, Chief Sustainability Officer at ELC, highlights the company's progress, stating that as of fiscal year 2023, 71% of ELC's packaging by weight is now recyclable, refillable, reusable, recycled, or recoverable. Mahon emphasizes ELC's dedication to integrating sustainability principles into packaging decisions, aiming to create elegant solutions while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
Sustainability is a driving force behind ELC's innovation initiatives. The company's Packaging Sustainability Guidelines, introduced in 2020, provide a roadmap for reducing materials use, designing for reuse, and increasing recycled content. Through collaborations and industry-leading solutions, ELC aims to set new standards for sustainability in the beauty industry.
ELC's commitment to sustainability extends across its diverse portfolio of brands. Aveda, for example, pioneers responsible packaging with paper-based, locally recyclable sachets for product samples. Compared to plastic alternatives, these sachets reduce water consumption by at least 36% and emit 37% fewer greenhouse gases, showcasing ELC's dedication to innovation and sustainability.
Each brand within ELC's portfolio tailors packaging solutions to meet unique requirements and consumer demographics. From transitioning to glass packaging to offering refillable options, ELC's brands demonstrate that sustainability and luxury can coexist harmoniously.
Collaboration is key to driving industry-wide change. ELC actively participates in initiatives such as the Sustainable Packaging Initiative for Cosmetics and collaborates with suppliers like Eastman to incorporate advanced recycling technologies into packaging materials.
Rob Peterson, Senior Vice President of Global R&D and Supply Chain at ELC, emphasizes the importance of partnerships in advancing sustainability goals. Peterson highlights ELC's belief that packaging enables unique value propositions and can drive sustainability solutions across industries.
ELC's commitment to sustainability extends beyond packaging to its operations. Internal guidelines minimize virgin petroleum plastic and prioritize recycling across offices, stores, and manufacturing sites.
As Earth Day approaches, ELC invites stakeholders to join its journey toward sustainable luxury packaging. Together, ELC and its partners strive to unpack what's possible and create a healthier planet for future generations.
