Affectionately known as ‘Masters of Minimalism’ David Abraham, Rakesh Thakore, and Kevin Nigli, have always made experimental inroads into Indian fashion. Celebrated designers Abraham & Thakore present an extraordinary preview of their Spring-Summer '25 collection, ‘Finding Beauty,’ at Lakmē Fashion Week 2024.
'Finding Beauty' delves into the forgotten, the cast-off, and the disregarded. A proposition for a new kind of couture, this collection of luxuriant evening wear comprises discarded materials that are normally left behind in our rapidly moving world. It furthermore picks up a thread woven through the brand’s narrative:
collapsing the binaries of discarded versus glamour, the new against the old. The collection reimagines waste as a treasure, profoundly reflecting consumption and value.
The collection features innovative designs that tell stories of transformation, breathing new life into unconventional materials. Memories once trapped in old film reels are now expressed on delicate georgettes, while unspooled cassette tapes are intricately woven into organza, forming delicate floral motifs that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Hundreds of discarded chip wrappers, each with its tale of wild nights and cheeky cheat days, are stitched together to create striking knee-length dresses. Adding a shimmering allure, laser-cut sequins made from discarded X-rays embody the brilliance of upcycled ingenuity.
In a dazzling display of ingenuity, sequins laser-cut from discarded X-rays make a glitzy comeback, showcasing the potential of materials that would otherwise be deemed waste. The delicious 'scroop' of silk, while attributed to plush French dresses of the early 1900s, emerges this time from the rustle of a contemporary knee-length skirt. Through this collection, everyday Indian streets are subjected to an unexpected lens, asking the audience to reflect on how we consume, and what we value — using wonder and awe as twin tunnels of transformation through which cement sacks emerge as evening gowns.
Gunny bags, toffee wrappers, bin bags, kitchen foil and rice sacks are reframed and recontextualized in this journey from the scrap to the ramp. The collection provocatively asks, “What is beauty, “if not perspective?” Designers David
Abraham, Kevin Nigli, and Rakesh Thakore skillfully transform the familiar into the gloriously strange and the strange into the gloriously familiar. This is high fashion that, while glamorous, sheds all pretensions of fanciness, celebrating the artistry in the overlooked.
The ‘Finding Beauty’ collection is not just a showcase of fashion; it is a conversation starter, urging us to reconsider our definitions of beauty and value in a rapidly changing world.
