Bhubaneswar-based designer Reemly Mohanty, known for her exquisite handloom creations, is set to showcase Odisha’s traditional weaves at the upcoming India Fashion Week in London on November 16. Mohanty is the only designer from Odisha invited to this prestigious event.
This year’s theme at India Fashion Week is sustainability, aligning perfectly with Reemly's contemporary designs, which seamlessly blend Odisha’s handloom and traditional weaves with modern silhouettes. “Many renowned Indian designers will be showcasing their work at the event. I was invited due to my focus on sustainable fashion and handloom,” she shared, highlighting her passion for bringing Odisha’s art and cultural heritage to a global audience.
Her collection, titled “NILA – An Azure Charm,” draws inspiration from the color blue, a hue deeply significant in Indian culture. "Blue symbolizes the sky, the ocean, and deities like Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Shiva, in his blue form, represents the infinite and the eternal. As NilaKantha, or 'blue throat,' he embodies omnipresence and omnipotence, a result of drinking poison to save the universe during the Samudra Manthan,” Reemly explained, reflecting the cultural and spiritual depth woven into her designs.
Incorporating elements such as Pattachitra, as well as fish and tribal motifs, Reemly’s designs maintain the beauty of traditional weaves while adding a modern twist. Her collection features an array of clothing, from lehengas and suits to ready-to-wear sarees, each piece reflecting a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. The collection is further enhanced with Ikat and Zardosi elements, celebrating the intricate artistry of Odisha.
Last year’s India Fashion Week featured runway shows choreographed by prominent figures including Lokesh Sharma, Urvashi Kaur, Pkin, Noureen Dhanani, and Khinkhwab, setting a high standard for this year’s showcase of India’s sustainable fashion movement.
