The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), in collaboration with Global Victoria, has brought together over 20 Australian beauty and cosmetic brands under the Australia Pavilion at Cosmoprof India 2024. The premier B2B event for India’s fast-growing beauty market commenced today in Mumbai and will continue until December 7, 2024.
In an exclusive interview with Gurbir Singh Gulati, Editor-in-Chief of IFAB Media (infashionbusiness.com), John Southwell, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner – South Asia, Australian Trade and Investment Commission, discussed Australia’s presence at the event, the Indian market's immense potential, and the innovations driving the Australian beauty industry.
Speaking about Australia’s participation, Southwell expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to engage with the Indian market:
“It’s fantastic to be part of Cosmoprof India 2024 happening in Mumbai, a pivotal event within the global Cosmoprof network, highlighting the growing importance of the Indian beauty market. For the first time, we’ve organized a dedicated Australian pavilion, featuring over 20 leading brands across skincare, haircare, personal care, and cosmetics. This initiative underscores our commitment to bringing the best of Australia to India while celebrating our shared values of quality, innovation, and sustainability.”
When asked about catering to the unique needs of Indian consumers, Southwell emphasized the importance of local insight and adaptability:
“We encourage our brands to engage directly with Indian consumers and gain firsthand knowledge of their preferences. It’s not about imposing our products but understanding how they can complement the Indian market. Our goal is to ensure that Australian beauty products enhance and align with the local cosmetics industry, adding value rather than competing unnecessarily.”
Australia’s beauty industry is globally recognized for its focus on natural and sustainable practices. Southwell elaborated:
“Australian brands are known for their cruelty-free and eco-friendly products that often incorporate native ingredients such as emu oil, a centuries-old innovation used by Aboriginal women. Our industry integrates traditional wisdom with modern science, creating products that are not only effective but also sustainable. Additionally, we prioritize environmentally conscious packaging to minimize our impact.”
On navigating trade and regulatory environments, Southwell highlighted the role of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA):
“AI-ECTA has facilitated tariff reductions on several Australian products entering India, making market entry smoother. Of course, challenges exist, but these are opportunities to build robust partnerships while ensuring compliance with local regulations. We see this as a genuine two-way trade opportunity that benefits both economies.”
Discussing promotional strategies for Australian beauty products in India, Southwell said:
“Trade shows like Cosmoprof India are invaluable platforms for creating awareness and fostering connections. We aim to educate Indian consumers about the unique attributes of Australian products and engage with retailers, e-commerce platforms, and other distribution channels to ensure our products reach their intended audiences.”
Looking ahead, Southwell shared his optimism about Australian beauty brands in India:
“In five years, I envision significantly greater awareness and availability of Australian beauty products in India. With our extensive network across South Asia, including a strong presence in India, we are committed to fostering partnerships that strengthen both the Indian and Australian beauty industries.”
