Singur in Bengal is on the brink of a transformative opportunity as the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) unveils plans to establish it as a global export hub for fashion and costume jewellery. This initiative has sparked renewed hope for prosperity among locals, skilled craftsmen, and the state government.
Home to a skilled workforce of nearly one lakh Bengali kaarigars, with 20% of them being women, Singur’s rich artisanal heritage and central location make it an ideal choice for this ambitious project. The area is in close proximity to five railway stations and NH-2, which connects to Kolkata International Airport, making logistics seamless. Additionally, Kolkata’s renowned craftsmanship serves as a strong foundation for jewellery manufacturers to leverage and enhance their designs.
The timing of this proposal aligns with shifting global trade dynamics, as international markets, including the US, seek alternatives to sourcing from China. This presents a strategic opportunity for Singur’s manufacturers to cater to this growing demand and elevate their global presence.
The Indian gem and jewellery market, valued at $85 billion, is set for rapid growth and is projected to reach $130 billion by 2030. GJEPC is bolstering this growth with various initiatives, including investments of ₹150 crore in global generic diamond promotion campaigns. India's jewellery industry stands out for its excellence in design, aesthetics, and the adoption of smart-tech solutions for manufacturing. By deepening the knowledge base and promoting skill development, the country is well-positioned to become a global hub for gem and jewellery trade, contributing significantly to the vision of Viksit Bharat.
To amplify its efforts, GJEPC has partnered with De Beers, the world’s leading diamond firm, to promote natural diamonds in India. Their collaboration, titled INDRA (Indian Natural Diamond Retailer Alliance), supports independent retailers with innovative tools, such as AI-driven customized campaigns, multilingual marketing assets, immersive storytelling, and superior customer experiences. Additionally, the program includes in-depth natural diamond jewellery training in local languages to ensure consumer resonance.
In a further boost to exports, GJEPC has teamed up with DHL Express to facilitate efficient international shipping for India-crafted jewellery, ensuring these exquisite pieces reach global markets seamlessly.
With its skilled artisans, strategic location, and robust initiatives by GJEPC, Singur is on the path to becoming a global name in fashion and costume jewellery. This golden opportunity holds the promise of a prosperous future for the region and its people.
