In a major step towards reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s leadership in India’s textile sector, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Tuesday announced the Centre’s approval of a ₹1,894-crore development package for the Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Park to be set up in the state’s Virudhunagar district.
Spanning 1,052 acres, the upcoming park is designed to create a state-of-the-art textile manufacturing ecosystem, with a particular focus on technical textiles and integrated processing units. It is one of seven PM MITRA Parks being established across India under the Government of India’s flagship initiative aimed at transforming the textile industry through cutting-edge infrastructure, robust policy frameworks, and attractive investment incentives.
The project—first formalised in 2023—comes after extensive dialogue between the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and the Ministry of Textiles. Commenting on the development, State Industries Minister T. R. B. Rajaa described the approval as a “major breakthrough” and a direct outcome of sustained engagement and cooperation with the Centre.
According to the state government, the project is expected to draw investments worth ₹10,000 crore and generate employment for over one lakh individuals. Construction and infrastructure development are targeted for completion by September 2026.
“Tamil Nadu is already the top exporter of textiles in the country. With this new PM MITRA Park, we are poised to scale greater heights with a clear, ambitious roadmap,” Rajaa stated.
Among the park’s key infrastructure highlights are a 15 million-litre-per-day (MLD) common effluent treatment plant with zero liquid discharge, a 5 MLD sewage treatment plant, dedicated accommodation for 10,000 workers, and over 1.3 million square feet of plug-and-play and built-to-suit manufacturing space.
Tamil Nadu is among the seven states selected to host PM MITRA Parks, alongside Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh—an initiative that marks a strategic nationwide push to elevate India’s textile sector to global standards.
