India strengthened its creative dialogue with the MENA region as it continued as Guest Country for Fashion Trust Arabia (FTA) in 2026. Marking this ongoing partnership, New Delhi–based label Kartik Research presented a special showcase at Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI this March, marking the brand’s first-ever runway presentation in India.

Founded in 2021 by designer Kartik Kumra, fashion label Kartik Research swiftly emerged as one of India’s most compelling new-generation labels. Rooted in the idea of restoring humanness to clothing, the brand centres handwork at its core. Wovens are produced on handlooms, embroideries are executed entirely by hand, and each garment carries the imprint of artisan collaboration.
Drawing from India’s layered subcultures, Kartik Research explores heritage through a contemporary lens. References range from the psychedelic optimism of 1960s rock movements to the Indo-modernist art wave of the 1980s, creating collections that examine how craft and cultural aspiration evolve together. The label works closely with master artisans across India, reviving overlooked techniques and repositioning them within a global fashion conversation.

The showcase at Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI marked a defining homecoming moment for the brand, which is celebrating its fifth year. While Kartik Research has built an international following through its nuanced storytelling and artisanal integrity, this was its first official presentation on an Indian runway -- a milestone that underscored the growing synergy between India’s craft ecosystem and global luxury markets.

For the showcase, the collection drew deeply from the textile traditions that have shaped the brand’s identity since its early days. The textiles themselves told the story. Handspun khadi from Bhujodi, Rabari embroidery from Kutch and hand knitting from the women’s cooperative in Almora were key elements of the collection. These materials and techniques have long been part of the Kartik Research universe, and revisiting them felt less like repetition and more like returning to something familiar and continuing an evolving conversation with craft.
Several pieces from the brand’s early years were also revisited on the runway. Some of the label’s earliest shirts and workwear-inspired silhouettes reappeared alongside newer shapes that felt looser and more relaxed. The garments reflected the brand’s belief that clothing feels most authentic when it is easy, lived-in and slightly imperfect, a philosophy that ran consistently through the collection.
At its heart, the showcase was also a tribute to the people behind the brand. The craftspeople, small workshops and collaborators who have contributed to Kartik Research over the past five years remained
central to the narrative. Presenting the collection in Mumbai, and in India, allowed the brand to pause and acknowledge this journey before continuing forward on its global path.
Speaking about the collection, Kartik Kumra said, “Being recognised by Fashion Trust Arabia as the India Winner is both an honour and a responsibility. When I started the brand, it was really just an excuse to travel across India and spend time learning from craftspeople whose work I admired. Somewhere along the way it went from a hobby into a proper fashion label. The past few years have been a blur of trains, small workshops, textile experiments, mistakes, and small breakthroughs. For this show I kept coming back to the idea of looking backwards in order to move forward. Instead of chasing something entirely new, we started revisiting the pieces that have quietly defined the brand over time. Certain shirts, trousers, jackets, and small details that have followed us from the very beginning, and we pulled them apart, reworked them, sometimes just let them exist again as they were.”
Tania Fares, co-founder and co-chair, Fashion Trust Arabia said, “Fashion Trust Arabia is proud to see Karthik Research present his work at Lakmé Fashion Week this season. His distinctive vision and thoughtful craftsmanship truly embody the spirit of emerging talent we aim to champion. Karthik was the winner of our Guest Country category in November 2025, when we partnered with the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre to celebrate India as our guest country. Seeing him now showcase his work on this stage feels like a natural continuation of that collaboration and of our shared commitment to supporting the next generation of designers on an international platform.”
