Gap has celebrated the remarkable success of its recent collaboration with global fashion icon Hailey Bieber, describing the launch of the 1996 Jean as a defining cultural moment that successfully bridged the brand's rich denim heritage with a new generation of consumers. The reflection came from Fabiola Torres, Global Chief Marketing Officer, Gap, who shared her thoughts on LinkedIn following the overwhelming response to the campaign.
According to Torres, the partnership was conceived around a simple yet powerful idea—celebrating both the year Hailey Bieber was born and Gap's enduring legacy in 1990s denim culture. The result was the 1996 Jean, a limited-edition denim capsule that quickly transcended a traditional product launch to become one of the season's most talked-about fashion campaigns.
"I’m still in awe of what happened last week," Torres wrote, adding that the campaign demonstrated how authentic storytelling rooted in heritage and contemporary culture can create extraordinary consumer engagement. She noted that the launch sparked widespread conversations across social media, generated significant media attention, and reinforced Gap's relevance among younger audiences while reconnecting with longtime fans of the brand.
Launched on 16 July, the Hailey Jean capsule reinterprets Gap's iconic relaxed denim silhouettes through Hailey Bieber's personal style. Inspired by the effortless fashion sensibility of the late 1990s, the collection combines nostalgia with modern design, offering consumers a contemporary take on classic denim.
The capsule features two signature silhouettes—Extra Baggy and '90s Low Rise Loose—both inspired by vintage Gap jeans that Bieber has worn over the years. The collection includes six distinctive washes, updated proportions and subtle "1996" branding that references Bieber's birth year, while her signature is printed inside the pocket lining. The Low Rise Loose silhouette is available exclusively through Gap's digital platform.
Speaking about the collaboration during the launch, Hailey Bieber said the partnership felt natural because Gap had been a part of her wardrobe since childhood.
"Gap has been a part of my wardrobe since I was a kid, so this came together very organically," she said. "1996 was the year I was born and I get a lot of style inspiration from the '90s because there was something so effortless about that era and the way people wore denim. We wanted the campaign and the collection to capture that same feeling in a way that felt modern, nostalgic, and personal."
The campaign was developed by Bolded, the branded content studio of OBB Media, a longtime creative partner of Hailey Bieber. Blending nostalgia, minimalism and contemporary fashion storytelling, the campaign features photography by acclaimed fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti, styling by Alastair McKimm, and a campaign film directed by Charlie Di Placido. The film pays homage to 1996 through the use of The Cranberries' iconic track Linger, reinforcing the emotional connection to the decade that inspired the collection.
Jane Pattinson, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Design at Gap, said the collaboration focused on translating Hailey Bieber's natural approach to denim into products that felt authentic to both the brand and the model.
"Hailey understands denim in a very instinctive way—from proportion and fit to how it actually moves and wears on the body," Pattinson said. "Together, we built the collection around the relaxed silhouettes she naturally gravitates toward and the effortless way she styles them in her everyday wardrobe. The pieces feel effortless, personal, and very true to both Hailey and Gap."
Torres also acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the campaign, thanking the Gap team, Hailey Bieber and her management, along with creative and production partner OBB Media, for helping transform the concept into a campaign that resonated globally.
Gap's latest collaboration reflects the growing importance of celebrity-led product storytelling in fashion, where heritage brands are increasingly leveraging influential cultural voices to strengthen their connection with younger consumers. By combining its iconic denim legacy with Hailey Bieber's contemporary fashion influence, the American apparel retailer has successfully positioned the 1996 Jean as both a celebration of its past and a statement about the future of modern denim.
