Slow Fashion Label PIPAL officially launched during the busiest weekend of Berlin Fashion Week SS27 with "INHERITED: The Pop Up" held at the historical location of Das Werkhaus, Heckmann Höffe . The event, part of the official Studio2Retail BFW calendar, drew over 200 guests for the first public screening of the brand's debut campaign. Along with a private viewing and sale of it's debut Collecion, "INHERITED: Survival & Existence." The pop-up was supported by BELMILAN wine as the official alcohol sponsor.
Founded by Agra-born, Berlin-based designer Ronika Pipal. PIPAL is a one-woman label built on natural dyeing, hand-craft techniques, and garments made entirely from dead-stock and scavenged fabric. The brand produces only one collection a year, with trickle down pieces made from the leftover offcuts, a deliberate rejection of fashion’s fast paced seasonal production cycles.
At the entrance to the Pop Up, guests were greeted by a saffron-dyed scarf, hand-inscribed in henna with the words “EDUCATE. AGITATE. ORGANISE.”, the words of Indian social reformer Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, positioned to face both the sun and arriving guests. The installation was designed to draw attention to what Pipal describes as the largely apolitical culture of the Indian fashion industry, and to signal her own practice as one rooted in political and social commentary.
“PIPAL is a deeply personal attempt to hold on to my roots as I watch my design identity evolve time and again,” said Pipal. “Each garment is an intimate study of the materials, techniques, and memories that have shaped not only my practice as a designer, but also my identity as a person. It is a bridge between the culture that nurtured me and the place I once called home, and the culture that continues to shape me in the place I now call home. I have always believed clothing is a voice and fashion a platform for revolution. Now more than ever as a designer and also as a consumer there is a need to not just use your voice but to proudly wear it.”
PIPAL presents an alternative approach to fashion with a strict no-mass production policy and a school of thought that focuses on the conceptual art of dressmaking. The clothing is treated as voice rather than a product. And the end consumer a collaborator to promote the culture of taking a stance through one's closet. Selected products are currently available on the brand's website, the brand plans to have an international presence with stockists spread across the globe.
