Thai luxury and lifestyle brand Jim Thompson has expanded its presence in India’s premium interiors market with its launch at Decorgeous Lifestyle in Chennai, marking the brand’s entry into the South Indian market. The launch has been facilitated by Delhi-based textile design company RR Décor, bringing the internationally recognised brand’s distinctive portfolio of luxury textiles and home furnishings to architects, interior designers and discerning consumers in the region.
The Chennai offering includes furniture fabrics, cushions, throws, curtains and blinds, bedding and tapestries, showcasing Jim Thompson’s signature blend of craftsmanship, cultural storytelling and contemporary design. The launch also presents selections from the brand’s 2026 collections, including Nirin, The Citadel by No. Thompson and Oriental Odyssey, each drawing inspiration from different aspects of Thailand’s artistic, architectural and natural heritage.
Jim Thompson’s legacy is closely linked to the revival and international recognition of Thai silk. American businessman Jim Thompson moved to Thailand in 1945 after serving with the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and developed a deep fascination with Thailand’s architecture, traditional crafts and silk-weaving heritage. He subsequently devoted himself to revitalising the country’s silk industry, helping transform Thai silk into a globally recognised luxury textile. His appreciation for colour, texture, craftsmanship and the individuality of handwoven textiles became central to the brand’s identity.
The latest collections continue this philosophy while interpreting Thai heritage through a contemporary design lens. Nirin highlights the beauty of handwoven Thai silk through natural colours, tactile surfaces and distinctive textures. Oriental Odyssey draws inspiration from Thailand’s Rattanakosin era, incorporating motifs influenced by historic architecture, art and ceremonial traditions into luxury fabrics and wallcoverings. The Citadel by No. Thompson explores the relationship between urban architecture and nature, while Bill Bensley’s Wild collection reflects the designer’s deep connection with wildlife and the natural world.
Among the distinctive designs showcased is Golden Fans, a silk-blend fabric featuring folding-fan motifs woven into a satin base with gilded threads. Inspired by ceremonial fans associated with Thailand’s royal courts, the design combines traditional symbolism with a contemporary aesthetic. Lost Kingdom takes inspiration from Ayutthaya, the historic Thai kingdom, incorporating gilded details and architectural silhouettes inspired by Siamese temples.
The collections also demonstrate the breadth of Jim Thompson’s design vocabulary, bringing together traditional Thai craftsmanship, nature-inspired imagery, architectural references and contemporary furnishing aesthetics. Through these diverse expressions, the brand continues to position textiles as an important medium for storytelling and cultural interpretation within modern interiors.
Rohit Khemka, Founder, RR Décor, highlighted Jim Thompson’s contribution to the revival of Thai silk, noting the brand’s appreciation for colour, texture, individuality and the human touch of artisans. According to Khemka, Thompson introduced new techniques in weaving, styling and design that helped Thai silk gain international recognition, with leading fashion houses eventually incorporating the fabric into eveningwear, bridal and couture.
The Chennai launch comes at a time when consumers and design professionals in the city are increasingly open to expressive interiors, colour and globally influenced design. Rohini Vasudevan, Chief Designer, Decorgeous Lifestyle, observed that Chennai’s design preferences are evolving as consumers become more exposed to international design and increasingly embrace colour and statement pieces.
For RR Décor, bringing Jim Thompson to Chennai strengthens its effort to make premium international textile design more accessible to the South Indian design community. The brand’s portfolio offers architects, interior designers and homeowners a combination of luxury materials, intricate craftsmanship and contemporary interpretations of Thai cultural heritage.
With its debut at Decorgeous Lifestyle, Jim Thompson brings its longstanding connection with Thai silk and craftsmanship to a new Indian market, creating a bridge between Thailand’s rich textile traditions and the evolving language of contemporary luxury interiors.
