Sportking India Limited is advancing a major greenfield expansion in Odisha, with the textile manufacturer setting up a new spinning facility in Khordha district involving an investment of around ₹1,000 crore. The project is expected to add significant manufacturing capacity and create more than 6,000 direct employment opportunities, according to recent reports on the project.

The Odisha facility represents Sportking’s first major manufacturing expansion outside Punjab and forms part of the company’s strategy to increase its spinning capacity while establishing a stronger presence in eastern India. In an earlier earnings call, the company outlined a greenfield capacity addition programme involving approximately ₹1,000 crore of capital expenditure and an additional 1.50 lakh spindles.

More recently, CRISIL Ratings reported that the ongoing Odisha expansion involves an outlay of ₹960 crore and is expected to commence operations in the third quarter of FY2027. The project is expected to increase Sportking’s installed spinning capacity from approximately 3.79 lakh spindles to 5.29 lakh spindles, representing an increase of around 40%.

The facility is being developed as a greenfield spinning plant, with the company having secured land and construction already underway. Machinery procurement has also progressed, with machinery orders reportedly placed for the project.

The new plant is expected to primarily manufacture premium compact cotton yarn, according to CRISIL. The rating agency noted that the Odisha expansion is expected to strengthen Sportking’s access to eastern and southern Indian markets while also supporting its international market reach. Odisha’s proximity to ports is another factor supporting the company’s geographic diversification and export-oriented operations.

Sportking India has an established presence across the textile value chain, with operations spanning yarns, fabrics, garments and retail. The company describes itself as a vertically integrated textile conglomerate, with manufacturing capabilities covering activities from cotton procurement and spinning through knitting, fabric processing, dyeing, garment manufacturing and retail. It exports to more than 30 countries and operates more than 100 retail outlets in India.

The company’s FY2026 annual report states that Sportking operates three manufacturing facilities and produces a diversified range of grey and dyed textile yarns for domestic and international weaving and knitting markets. During FY2025-26, the company reported production of 83,801 metric tonnes of cotton and synthetic yarn, with capacity utilisation at approximately 96%.

The Odisha investment comes at a time when the state is seeking to strengthen its position as a textile and apparel manufacturing destination. In June 2026, Odisha’s State Level Single Window Clearance Authority approved investment proposals worth ₹3,793.33 crore across multiple sectors, including textiles and apparel, with the projects collectively expected to generate nearly 20,000 jobs.

For Sportking, the Khordha facility is expected to provide additional capacity at a time when the company has been operating its existing spinning capacity at relatively high utilisation levels. CRISIL said the company’s FY2026 operating income stood at ₹2,503 crore, while capacity utilisation remained at 95–97%. The rating agency expects the Odisha facility to support revenue growth as it becomes operational.

The project is therefore positioned as both a capacity expansion for Sportking and a new addition to Odisha’s growing textile manufacturing ecosystem. With the facility expected to add 1.50 lakh spindles, create more than 6,000 direct employment opportunities and strengthen the state’s spinning and textile value chain, the investment could further expand Odisha’s role in India’s textile manufacturing landscape.
