The National Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation (NISTI) held an online event on 3 October 2026 featuring an interview with Dr. S. K. Chaudhari, widely known as India’s ‘Woolman’, on his latest book, From Sheep to Sustainability. Conducted by Prof. (Dr.) Vinod Shanbhag, the discussion explored the science and technology of wool, sustainability, and the future of India’s wool industry.
The event was moderated by Prof. Nien Siao and Prof. Nidhi Gupta of JSID, New Delhi. Dr. R. A. Lal, Chairman, NISTI, delivered the welcome address and opening remarks, while Shri A. N. Bajpai, Joint Secretary, NISTI, delivered the vote of thanks.
The interview highlighted the distinctive features of From Sheep to Sustainability and its relevance to the global textile fraternity. Discussions covered wool science, technological developments, sustainable practices, commercial opportunities and the challenges confronting India’s wool sector.
Dr. Chaudhari shared insights into his journey in wool research, which began during his studies at IIT Delhi. His early research focused on discolouration in Indian wool and its implications for fibre quality and market value. The discussion underscored the importance of scientific research in understanding wool characteristics and improving the competitiveness of Indian wool.
The conversation also examined key challenges facing the domestic wool sector, including declining production, inadequate sheep-management practices, quality concerns and dependence on imported wool. Dr. Chaudhari emphasised the need to strengthen sheep breeding, grazing practices, nutrition, animal health and scientific wool management to improve both production levels and fibre quality.
Another key area of discussion was the utilisation of wool waste and opportunities for value addition. Dr. Chaudhari highlighted the need for focused research and development to identify commercially viable applications for wool waste. He also stressed the importance of stronger coordination among research institutions, government agencies, industry and other stakeholders to translate research outcomes into practical and commercially relevant solutions.
Reflecting on the evolution of India’s wool and textile sector, Dr. Chaudhari emphasised the need for a more organised and integrated approach encompassing sheep breeding, research, technical development, processing, product development and marketing. Such coordination, the discussion highlighted, is important for addressing longstanding industry challenges while unlocking opportunities for innovation and growth.
The event brought attention to the role of scientific sheep management, fibre-quality improvement, waste utilisation, focused research and industry–research collaboration in building a more sustainable and commercially viable wool sector in India. The discussion also reinforced the relevance of advancing wool science and technology to strengthen the sector’s contribution to the wider textile industry.
