Exploring the relationship between nature, memory and the art of letting go, designer Somya Goyal presented her latest collection, ‘Ilume’, at Lakmē Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI at Taj Palace, New Delhi. Rooted in the philosophy of impermanence, the collection explored the freedom that comes with releasing what no longer needs to be carried, translating this personal reflection into an interplay of colour, texture and form.
Drawing inspiration from the natural elements and their ability to embody transformation, movement and renewal, the collection’s palette moved between lightness, depth and stillness. Yellow symbolised the warmth of the sun and the promise of new beginnings, while off-white evoked the freedom and weightlessness of air. Deep cobalt reflected the fluidity of water, brick captured the warmth of fire and embers, and sage olive represented the enduring nature of earth and stone. Navy, inspired by ash and dust, brought a sense of quiet closure. Silks, satins, cottons and carefully considered fabric blends further complemented the collection’s sculptural silhouettes and architectural construction, translating the passage of time and the nuances of memory into tactile surfaces and dimensional forms.
A key highlight of the showcase was the handwoven textiles developed in collaboration with a weaving cluster, reflecting Goyal’s continued commitment to material innovation and artisanal craftsmanship. Combining viscose, silk and the label’s signature transparent cords, the textiles featured checks, stripes and linear patterns woven directly into the fabric, eliminating the need for printing or machine-made surface decoration. The collection also explored material reuse through surplus stitching threads recovered from previous collections, individually selected for their colour and character before being combined with transparent PVC and satin cords. Through hand-executed quilting, these reclaimed threads were transformed into dimensional, sculptural textures, offering a contemporary interpretation of traditional techniques. Intricate hand embroidery and surface manipulation further introduced depth through a combination of two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements, while retaining the softness of the garments. Together, these techniques reinforced the collection’s emphasis on precision tailoring and architectural construction, demonstrating how traditional craftsmanship and unconventional materials can be reinterpreted through an experimental design language.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the collection, designer Somya Goyal shared, “Ilume comes from a very personal thought about learning to let go and understanding that there is beauty in things changing, evolving and eventually finding a new form. I wanted to translate that feeling into clothing through the elements of nature, where every colour, texture and material carries a certain emotion. The collection also allowed us to explore our craft in new ways, from handwoven textiles using transparent cords to giving surplus threads from previous collections an entirely new purpose. For me, it is about creating pieces that feel thoughtful and expressive, where the process of making is just as meaningful as the final garment.”
With ‘Ilume’, Somya Goyal presented a contemplative interpretation of contemporary fashion, bringing together nature, memory and material innovation through a distinctive design language. The collection highlighted the potential of thoughtful textile development to create new expressions of luxury, while finding renewed purpose in existing resources. By transforming surplus materials into expressive surfaces and reimagining traditional artisanal techniques through contemporary construction, Goyal brought the philosophy of impermanence to life through clothing. More than an exploration of silhouette and texture, ‘Ilume’ celebrated the beauty of change and the freedom of release, offering a reminder that letting go need not signify an ending, but can mark the beginning of something new.
