The government announced on Tuesday its approval of 12 new research projects under the National Technical Textiles Mission, committing Rs 13.3 crore to these initiatives. The decision was made at the 10th Mission Steering Group meeting, chaired by Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh.
These approved projects focus on key strategic areas, including geotextiles, sustainable and smart textiles, and composites, among others. According to the Ministry of Textiles, the projects have been proposed by reputable research institutions and organizations, including IITs, NITs, and the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI).
With this latest round, the Mission has now approved a total of 168 research projects, with a combined value nearing Rs 509 crore. During the meeting, Minister Singh emphasized the need for industry collaboration and urged industry stakeholders to actively engage in these research projects.
The National Technical Textiles Mission, a flagship program of the Ministry of Textiles, is focused on bolstering research and development in India's technical textiles sector, particularly in high-performance fiber technology. The domestic textiles industry is expected to grow to $350 billion by 2030, potentially creating 4.5 to 6 crore jobs.
Minister Singh also highlighted the government’s goal of producing 50,000 metric tonnes of silk and creating 1 crore jobs by 2030, linking silk cultivation to employment opportunities for farmers.
India’s technical textile sector holds significant growth potential, with applications across various industries. The government has set an ambitious export target of $10 billion for technical textiles by 2030. While global trade in technical textiles currently stands around $300 billion, India’s domestic market is valued at $25 billion, with an export contribution of $2.6 billion.
Under the National Technical Textiles Mission, the Ministry has also approved 11 startup proposals under the Grant for Research and Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles (GREAT) initiative. Each selected startup can receive support of up to Rs 50 lakh to drive innovation and growth in technical textiles.
