A day after the Trump administration modified its US-India trade deal factsheet, retracting certain details, further concessions appear to be on the horizon for India. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal revealed on Thursday that India is set to secure textile-related trade benefits similar to those granted to Bangladesh by the United States.
Goyal, who has been leading trade discussions with the US, indicated that Indian textile exporters could receive zero-tariff access to the US market for garments made using American cotton, once the final agreement is signed—mirroring the privileges extended to Bangladesh.
The announcement is expected to boost India’s textile and apparel industry, which has been under pressure following the US-Bangladesh trade deal. The clarification also comes amid political criticism of the trade negotiations. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi had labelled the agreement a “wholesale surrender” to the Trump administration, prompting Goyal to respond sharply.
Goyal stated that the claim that Bangladesh received greater benefits than India was misleading. “Bangladesh has a provision where garments made from US-sourced raw material can be exported at zero reciprocal tariff. India will receive the same facility,” he said.
While this provision may not be explicitly mentioned in the interim framework released last week, Goyal affirmed that it will be included in the final agreement. He added that the specifics would become clear once the interim framework is finalised and the detailed terms are available in the final text.
