NEXA Spotlight presented designer Anurag Gupta, the Season 11 winner of NEXA ‘The Spotlight’, who showcased his runway collection at Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI at the Jio Convention Center in Mumbai. Selected from a line-up of six shortlisted designers, Gupta’s win offered him the opportunity to present his work on one of India’s most prominent fashion platforms.

Backed by NEXA, The Spotlight is an initiative dedicated to discovering and nurturing emerging design talent across the country. The platform provides young designers with the visibility and industry support required to bring innovative ideas to the forefront of Indian fashion. The designer presented a collection titled ‘The New Primitive – Reclaiming Rawness in a Refined World’. The collection took inspiration from the dynamic visual narratives found in the works of Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi, translating the sense of movement and rhythm present in his art into a contemporary design language.
The collection explored how natural forms and engineered structures could coexist within a refined fashion framework. Rather than presenting nature and technology as opposing forces, the designer approached them as complementary systems capable of evolving together.

At the centre of the collection was a newly developed textile created from natural fibres and engineered using plasma technology processing. This advanced surface treatment enhanced the fabric’s receptivity, tensile stability and structural memory, while preserving the tactile qualities associated with organic materials. The technology was applied with a deliberate sense of restraint, ensuring that innovation enhanced rather than overwhelmed the integrity of the fibre.

Textile development continued through engineered jacquard constructions that interpreted Kuniyoshi’s fluid visual narratives into structured pattern systems. These jacquards transformed the artist’s sense of motion into dimensional textile surfaces, creating fabrics that appeared both dynamic and architectural.
The fibre itself was positioned as a responsible alternative within the broader cotton ecosystem. Developed with low water usage and minimal pesticide requirements, the material reflected a conscious direction toward sustainable fibre practices while supporting agricultural communities and long-term environmental responsibility.

Silhouettes within the collection mirrored the structural qualities of the textiles. Architectonic yet wearable, the garments were defined by structured geometry, reinforced construction and layered surface depth. Deconstruction was introduced strategically, revealing internal frameworks that emphasised the interplay between organic movement and engineered precision. Gupta built a narrative that he described as a form of ‘tectonic synthesis,’ a space where material science and natural processes existed in calibrated equilibrium.

Speaking about the collection, Anurag Gupta said, “This collection imagines a future where nature and technology are no longer negotiating space, but evolving as one system. I wasn’t interested in contrast, I was interested in coexistence. Marble becomes digital, hemp becomes engineered, tradition becomes speculative. The idea was to explore how innovation can amplify the organic rather than erase it. Every surface holds tension between geology and glitch, craft and code, permanence and flux. We are living in a time of climate urgency, and fashion cannot exist outside that dialogue. Through material choices and form, this collection reflects resilience, circular thinking, and responsibility not as trends, but as design principles. Inspired by the dynamism of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the garments feel in motion suspended between past and future. To me, this is not a dystopian vision. It is a hopeful one. A world where the organic and the engineered breathe together.”

Commenting on the initiative, Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said “At NEXA, we are honoured to support initiatives such as ‘NEXA Presents the Spotlight,’ which not only recognizes and celebrates emerging design talent, but also fosters innovation within the fashion industry. Our continued collaboration with NEXA at Lakmē Fashion Week X FDCI aims to highlight not only the biggest of designers but also to uncover hidden talent, and we are thrilled to have consistently achieved this goal with each passing season.”
Actress Malavika Mohanan closed the show for the designer in a striking all-white ensemble. She walked the runway in a structured, collared cropped jacket layered over a crisp white shirt, paired with a matching asymmetric knee-length skirt. The look was accessorised with a sleek black accent tie, adding a sharp contrast to the monochrome palette and elevating the overall sophistication of the outfit.
The designer’s presentation at Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI reflected the evolving dialogue between technology, sustainability and craft highlighting how emerging designers are redefining the possibilities of contemporary fashion.
