India’s cotton production for the 2024–25 season has been revised upward to 311.40 lakh bales of 170 kg each, according to the latest report released by the Cotton Association of India (CAI) for July 2025. This marks an increase of 10.25 lakh bales from the June 2025 estimate of 301.15 lakh bales. The upward revision is attributed to increased output from key cotton-growing states. Maharashtra saw the largest jump, with production estimated higher by 5 lakh bales. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh each recorded an increase of 1.50 lakh bales, followed by Karnataka with 1 lakh bales, Andhra Pradesh with 50,000 bales, and 25,000 bales each from Haryana, upper Rajasthan, and lower Rajasthan.
According to CAI’s region-wise breakdown, cotton production is now projected at 29.55 lakh bales in the North Zone, 186.50 lakh bales in the Central Zone, 89.50 lakh bales in the South Zone, and 5.85 lakh bales in Odisha and other states. State-specific estimates are: Punjab – 1.50 lakh bales, Haryana – 8.05 lakh bales, upper Rajasthan – 10.35 lakh bales, lower Rajasthan – 9.65 lakh bales, Gujarat – 77.50 lakh bales, Maharashtra – 90 lakh bales, Madhya Pradesh – 19 lakh bales, Telangana – 49.50 lakh bales, Andhra Pradesh – 12 lakh bales, Karnataka – 24 lakh bales, Tamil Nadu – 4 lakh bales, Odisha – 3.85 lakh bales, and other states – 2 lakh bales.
As of the end of June 2025, total cotton supply is estimated at 356.76 lakh bales. This includes market arrivals (pressings) of 296.57 lakh bales, imports of 30 lakh bales, and an opening stock of 30.19 lakh bales. Domestic cotton consumption until June 2025 has been pegged at 233.50 lakh bales, while export shipments are estimated at 15.25 lakh bales. The closing stock at the end of June 2025 is estimated at 108.01 lakh bales. Of this, 32 lakh bales are held by textile mills, while the remaining 76.01 lakh bales are held by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), the Maharashtra Federation, multinational corporations, traders, ginners, exporters, and cotton that has been sold but not delivered.
For the full 2024–25 cotton season, total cotton supply is now projected at 380.59 lakh bales, up from 370.34 lakh bales in the earlier estimate. This includes 30.19 lakh bales of opening stock, 311.40 lakh bales of production, and imports of 39 lakh bales. Comparatively, India’s cotton imports stood at 15.20 lakh bales in the 2023–24 season.
CAI has also revised domestic consumption estimates upward to 308 lakh bales, from the earlier projection of 305 lakh bales. However, the export estimate remains unchanged at 17 lakh bales, a decline from the 28.36 lakh bales recorded in the previous season.
The closing stock at the end of the 2024–25 season, as of September 30, 2025, is projected at 55.59 lakh bales — a significant rise from the 30.19 lakh bales at the end of the 2023–24 season.
