The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) has extended a warm welcome to the recently signed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom, calling it a significant step forward for the country’s apparel export industry. The agreement, while expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026 after necessary approvals and procedures, has already generated optimism within the sector.
According to CMAI, the FTA will open up substantial opportunities for Indian exporters, especially in the context of the UK’s substantial Indian diaspora. This demographic could provide an added push for traditional Indian ethnic apparel manufacturers to explore international markets and expand their global footprint.
Highlighting the impact of the upcoming zero-duty regime, Santosh Katariya, President of CMAI, stated, “Since imports of apparel from the UK are likely to be in the luxury and high-priced category, I am confident of the Indian domestic manufacturers' ability to face the increased competition.”
Echoing a positive outlook, Rahul Mehta, Chief Mentor of CMAI, said, “Duty-free imports from the UK will also raise the bar for Indian brands and retailers to up their quality, service, and brand propositions — all of which will benefit the Indian consumer.”
CMAI believes that while the direct advantages of the FTA may take some time to materialize, international buyers will soon begin their scouting and groundwork in anticipation. The association sees this as a critical moment for India’s apparel industry to showcase its strengths, scale up production, and enhance quality standards, thereby bolstering its role in global trade.
The FTA is not just about lowering tariffs, but also about building capabilities, encouraging innovation, and enabling Indian apparel brands to compete confidently on the world stage.
